I did a Yahoo search for the name Batten (yes, I'm that bored) and here's something I didn't know. Apparently there is something called Batten Disease. And no, it has nothing to do with going out of one's mind after one bears children by a man with the surname Batten.
"Batten disease is a fatal, inherited disorder of the nervous system that begins in childhood. In some cases, the early signs are subtle, taking the form of personality and behavior changes, slow learning, clumsiness, or stumbling."

a batten is also a strip of wood that keeps a door closed as in, "batten down the hatches!"
